Welcome Friends!

Welcome back!

We hope everyone had a restful and fun vacation! As we settle back into learning, we have a few notes:

-GISU has scheduled an inservice on Monday, March 1, which means NO SCHOOL for students either in person or remotely.

-Classes resume Tuesday, March 2, in-person for the B Cohort and remote for the A Cohort.

-Be sure to review the Class Newsletter (rainbow grid) for the big picture of your week’s learning. The Google Classroom has specific assignment instructions

-Don’t forget we have study sessions for Cohort A on Tuesday and Cohort B on Thursday. Check the newsletter for the times and links

BAND UPDATE:

Hi Folks! While the Vermont Ed Guidelines have changed to allow for playing and singing indoors, there are a LOT of safety precautions that need to be in place in order to allow this to happen. So, for now, band will remain from 2-3 as “Percussion Ensemble.”  It’s possible that the weather will warm enough for us to move outside and resume using our real band instruments before we even can meet the safety guidelines to play indoors- but stay tuned!

Lessons:
I have created new lesson groups for Trimester 3. Thank you SO MUCH for helping support your musicians in reminding them about their every-other-week band lesson. It will always show up on their calendar for that day, but a little check in with you about it would be very effective. We are still struggling to have every show up to their lesson group with an instrument AND a music book. When a musician shows up without music it’s incredibly difficult to give a virtual lesson because while the rest of their group is looking at the same piece of music, they don’t have anything to play.

Here is the lesson schedule- this week I will meet with the newly named “Chromatic Chameleons.”

Please email with any questions: kkauffeld@gisu.org
Thanks!

Middle School Spring Theatre: Hats Off!

I am SO excited to be able to offer a spring theatre option for our 5th-8th graders! Along with Anne Tracy and our virtual choreographer Justin Gardner (all the way from Colorado!) we will present “Hats Off!” a cabaret that will include songs from musical theatre, sketchy comedy, monologues, dramatic scenes, and dances. I have introduced the opportunity to all of the middle school except 5B and 8B who I did not have the pleasure of teaching in the month of February- so I will do that on Tuesday. Students have been given the chance to sign up for Hats Off! during their music classes, but can definitely still opt in if they’ve thought more about it over vacation! They, or you, can email me!

Rehearsals will run from 2-4 on your child’s in-person school days. Students who are in band or are working with another adult will join us for rehearsal from 3-4. They will need to be picked up at the end of rehearsal.

While we cannot have a live-audience, we will combine a video of both the A Day performance and B Day performance and hold a live-streamed event in May.

I anticipate having some initial student meetings after school next week (March 8-12) but still need to work out logistics, so stay tuned.

Of course, family and community support for theatre will need to look different than in the past, but as you can imagine the creative team will still be looking for volunteer help in Covid-Safe ways! More soon! WE’RE VERY EXCITED!!!!!
As always, reach out with questions or concerns, kkauffeld@gisu.org
Thank you so much,
Karlie
